Remembered Light This book tells the story of The McDonald Windows. Frederick Alexander McDonald (1908-2003) served as U.S. Army Chaplain during World War II. As he traveled through war-torn Europe, he found himself dismayed by the destruction of sacred places. He began saving small shards from shattered stained-glass windows in hopes that one day they could serve as testament to the sacrifices made by so many. Today, 25 works of art incorporating these shards, along with Chaplain McDonald’s memories of them, have been created yb 13 artists and assembled into a special exhibit. hat might a space designed to accommodate the needs of all faiths look like? In 2004, an international ideas competition was held to design sacred spaces where people from all religious traditions could feel comfortable, safe, and respected. Full color plates of each window are featured along with Rev. McDonald’s life, his years of military chaplaincy, and the story of how the pieces of broken glass have been transformed into beautiful new windows scheduled to be installed in the Main Post Interfaith Chapel in the Presidio of San Francisco. You can read more about McDonald and see the new windows at The McDonald Windows |
